John Mandile
Managing Director, Sigma Partners
John has 20 years of experience in the high technology
industry. Most recently he was the President & CEO of
Vermeer Technologies, Inc., the developers of FrontPage,
the leading Web authoring tool. Vermeer was acquired by
Microsoft, providing Sigma and the other venture investors
a very successful return. Previously, he was an early
principal at SQL Solutions, where he created and led an
engineering organization chartered to build heterogeneous
database tools. Following an acquisition of SQL Solutions
by Sybase, he took responsibility for the new Systems
Management Product unit, which he grew to $55 million in
sales in 30 months. Prior to SQL Solutions he was a member
of the Advanced Engineering program at Honeywell where he
worked in communications, operating systems and
co-processor design. He is a graduate of Tufts (BSE in
Engineering Science) and Worcester Polytechnic State
University (MS in Computer Science). He has been
responsible for Sigma's investments in Datasage, DotClick,
EasyAsk, Novera Software, Oberon Software, Onexchange.com,
OneRelease and OpenPages.
Stephen J. Ricci
Managing Director, Flagship Ventures
Steve Ricci has over 25 years of experience in the venture
capital industry, and is a founding General Partner of
Flagship Ventures. Prior to Flagship, Steve was a General
Partner at Palmer Partners (which he joined in 1974). His
early career includes a number of years in manufacturing
engineering with Dupont and Cambridge Tool. Steve has an
engineering degree from Tufts University and an MBA from
Harvard Business School. He is a past president of the New
England Venture Capital Association, and was a founding
advisor to Gilde Ventures, a major European venture
capital firm.
Steve's investment focus is information technology,
including enterprise software, Internet infrastructure,
data communications, and related services. He has an
extraordinarily deep and broad understanding of business
and business models in these sectors. Steve has been
involved in the financing of more than 100 companies,
including Banyan Systems (Nasdaq: EPRE), Charter Systems
(purchased by Bisys, Nasdaq: BSYS), Cintas (Nasdaq: CTAS),
Gensym Corp. (Nasdaq: GNSM), Indus River Networks
(purchased by Cabletron, NYSE: CS), Stratus Computer
(NYSE: SRA, purchased by Ascend, Nasdaq: ASND) and Summa
Four (Nasdaq: SUMA, purchased by Cisco, Nasdaq: CSCO). His
early venture career was directed toward product and
services innovations in the industrial sector.
